Lower Rhine Region circa 1500/1510

A Lower Rhenish oakwood figure of an angel with a candlestick, circa 1500/1510.

Carved in the round, with minor remains of former polychromy.. A figure of a standing angel carrying a large candlestick. The head is bowed and the left leg extended and visible beneath the floor-length robe. Above the robe, the figure wears a cope closed at the chest and decorated with a fringe to the lower hem, as well as a hood with a large round tassel - this detail, as well as the general style of the figure, enable the attribution to the circle of the lower Rhenish sculptor Dries Holthuys of Cleves.
The wings, which would previously have been set into the back, are now lost. The right hand replaced. Includes a moulded wooden socle. Height 36 cm (without the pricket).
