A probably Flemish carved wooden figure of the Virgin and Child on the flight into Egypt, first half 16th century. Muttergottes mit Kind aus einer Flucht nach Ägypten

Carved in the round. With partially overpainted older polychromy.. The Virgin is shown riding a donkey upon an oval base carved as stony ground. She is depicted facing the viewer and breastfeeding the swaddled infant Christ. The Virgin wears a long cloak, the back of which is so finely worked that it can be assumed that the piece originally formed a freestanding Flight into Egypt group with Joseph leading the donkey, to be viewed in the round.
With very minor wear. 71.5 x 58 x 17 cm.
