South German 17th century

A 17th century South German carved wooden figure of Saint John the Baptist.

Carved in the round, with remains of former polychromy.. A figure of John the Baptist standing in contrapposto, holding a book and the lamb of God in his left hand. The composition of this piece is characterised by the fine contrast between the Saint's animal-skin robe and the cloak he wears gathered around him.
Parts of the feet and the right hand lost. Wear throughout. Height 73 cm.
