Probably Spain circa 1700
A probably Spanish carved wooden figure of Saint Michael, circa 1700.
Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. The eyes of glass. The lace decorating the armour of linen. With largely original but partially overpainted polychromy.. An impressive figure of the Archangel Michael standing upon the back of the defeated Lucifer. He is dressed in armour and holds his sword aloft in his right hand and would originally have held a set of scales in the left, but this is now lost. The painted decor of the breastplate and floral ornaments of the Saint's tunic are both finely painted.
The wings and sword loosely attached. Wear with losses. Height 190 cm.
Private ownership, Central Rhine Region.
