The artistic activity of the Quaglio family in Italy and Germany spans from around 1630 to the early 20th century. This large family of artists was based in Munich as of the late 18th century, and one of its most talented members - Domenico II - was born in this city in 1787. After working as a scenery painter for the royal theatre in Munich, he turned to purely decorative painting as of 1819. Mainly focussing on architectural painting, he travelled throughout central Europe in search of motifs. He usually painted Gothic churches and cathedrals along with their busy surroundings, and soon advanced to one of the most popular veduta painters in Germany. In the context of the art scene in Munich, Quaglio forms a link between the Neoclassical attitude to genre and architectural painting and that of the Biedermeier era.
