Mechelen, early 16th century

An early 16th century Mechelen carved wood figure of the Virgin with Child

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. With extensive remains of presumably original former polychromy. The standing Virgin Mary holds the life-like Christ Child in both hands before Her body. The quality of the figure is particularly evident in the detailed depiction of the Virgin's robe. The work bears the city mark of Mechelen to the reverse.
The Child's right arm and tip of the right foot lacking. Losses to the plinth. Minimal wear. Mounted on a wooden base. Height 35.5 cm (without base).
