Johann (Hans) Hausser von Aachen

Ecce Homo

Oil on copper. 26 x 36.5 cm.

Only two signed works by the Aachen painter Hans Hausser, active around 1600, have survived: An “Adoration of the Magi” dated 1603 in private ownership and an “Ecce Homo” identical to the present work in the Schlossgalerie Aschaffenburg. An ink drawing with only minor amendments to the composition also exists and is kept in the Courtauld Institute. Hausser's style displays stylistic closeness to the works of Hans von Aachen, Hans Rottenhammer and Anton Mozart, indicating that he may have spent time in South Germany or Prague.
