Schauss was a pupil of the Berlin painter Carl Steffeck, who also taught Max Liebermann and Hans von Marées. In Paris, Schauss was taught by Léon Cogniet, a contemporary of Théodore Géricault and Eugène Delacroix. Schauss himself taught at the Weimar Academy during the 1870s.
The reverse of the work bears a label from the Chicago world fair in 1893 stating the title to be "Elegie".
