Richard Friese first apprenticed as a lithographer in Berlin in 1871, but at the same time also visited classes at the Kunstgewerbe Museum. His contemporaries there included the famous comical artist Heinrich Zille. From 1877 to 1880, Friese furthered his artistic training at the Berliner Kunstakademie. Inspired by his various travels, wild animals in their natural habitats became his preferred motif.
