Northern France ca. 1360/1380

A Northern French carved limestone figure of the Virgin enthroned, circa 1360/1380.

Carved in the round. Minor remains of older polychromy. A figure of the crowned Virgin seated on a moulded throne, holding the Christ Child with the dove of the Holy Spirit on Her left knee and a lily in Her right hand. The sculpture has been designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint but is carved in the round and therefore viewable from any angle. The Virgin's finely worked features are framed by wavy locks of hair and a veil which falls in symmetrical but flowing folds over her shoulders and back. This same stylised but lively quality is displayed in the finely carved drapery of the Virgin's girded dress, Her cloak and the cloth worn by the Child.
Wear with minimal losses. Height 89 cm.
