A Bohemian figure of the Virgin enthroned, circa 1470

Carved wood, the reverse flattened and hollowed out, remains of older polychromy. A piece designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. The Virgin is seated on a plain throne holding the standing nude Child on Her knees with Her left arm. She is depicted crowned and with Her head lowered to face the beholder, and Her finely carved hair reaches down to Her waist. She is clothed in a simple girded dress and a cloak draped over Her knees in a fine interplay of curved seams, thick bundles and drapes, which forms a fascinating contrast to the vertical folds of Her dress.
The Virgin's right hand and the Child's hands lost. Some wear. Height 81 cm.
