Probably Ulm ca. 1460/1480

A wooden figure of the Virgin with Child, probably carved in Ulm circa 1460/1480.

Carved three-quarters in the round. The reverse flattened and hollowed out. With partially overpainted older polychromy. A full-figure depiction of the crowned Virgin standing in contrapposto on a crescent moon. She carries the nude Christ Child over Her left hip and holds Her golden cloak drawn across Her body in the right hand. She wears a white veil beneath a tall openwork crown. The Virgin's girded red gown is almost entirely obscured by Her cloak, the vertical front and angular side folds of which largely define the composition of the piece. The Child holds a bunch of grapes in His left hand, the attribute in the right hand is lost.
Two points of the crown reattached. Minor wear. Breakages to the plinth. Height 119 cm.
