Central Rhine Region late 15th century

A Central Rhenish Pietà group, late 15th century

Wood, carved in the round. The older and in parts presumably original polychromy partially overpainted. A devotional image of the Virgin, intended for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. The Virgin wears a long cloak and veil and is depicted seated on a rock with Her hands raised in prayer. The rustic appearance of the body of Christ in His mother's lap, clothed in a perizonium and displaying the stigmata, lends the figure a particularly expressive quality.
With minor wear. Mounted to a flat wooden base. Height 54 cm (without base).

Provenance

Private collection, Rhineland.
