Ulm ca. 1500

An Ulm carved limewood figure of St. Sebastian, circa 1500.

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. With partially overpainted older polychromy. A finely carved depiction of the saint standing in contrapposto and turned slightly to the right. His lively features are framed by long and deeply undercut curls emerging from beneath a broad brimmed hat. The saint is clothed in a perizonium, but also wears a long cloak drawn about his lower body which falls in an angular scheme of drapery and gathers about his feet in heavy folds. The work can be attributed to the circle of the Ulm sculptor Niklaus Weckmann.
The arrows replaced. A small loss to the right side of the plinth. Wear with losses to the polychromy. Height 91 cm.
