Northern France 2nd half 14th century

A Northern French carved ivory diptych, 2nd half 14th century.

The outer panels of the diptych are plain and uncarved, and the the raised depictions to the inner compartments are framed by plain borders. The right panel shows Christ on the cross flanked by Mary and Saint John, and the left panel shows three saints carrying martyr's palms, presumably Saint Margaret with the dragon (?), Saint Catherine with the wheel and a male saint with a book. The depictions are framed to the upper border by three gothic arches with decorative pediments.
The panels connected by two older hinges, the left panel with a brown stain to the upper right from the hinges. With remains of a metal clasp to the upper corners. With several short, narrow vertical cracks, otherwise in perfect condition. Each panel 6.8 x 5.1 cm.
