Northern Italy late 14th century

A late 14th century Northern Italian carved ivory figure of Saint Joseph.

Minor remains of former gilding to the hair and the hems of the robe. A large figure of the saint carved from a third of the curve of an ivory tusk, originally belonging to a depiction of the birth of Christ. Saint Joseph is depicted in profile facing left, he is shown bent down on one knee and probably originally held a candle in his raised hand. The saint's face, with its quirky, bearded features, is carved three-quarters in the round.
With several fine, vertical cracks. Wear with losses to the left contour between the arm and knee (the right hand was also formerly glued to this area). Height 28.5 cm.

Provenance

Private collection, Rhineland.
