Katana. 16th century; koshirae. 19th century

Katana, blade length 75.4 cm, shinogi zukuri, gunome midare hamon, ômaru bôshi, dense itame, bôhi with ken, ken-vajra and bonji-characters, nakago: ubu, one mekugi-ana, mumei. Very good state of polish, double habaki of gilt copper with yasurime. 16th century.

Koshirae: Shakudô mikagiji tsuba with gold inlay, warrior on horseback in low and sunken relief, inscribed Yasuchika; fuchi-kashira and kojiri: shakudô-nanako with kiri-mon and Hosokawa kuyô-mon, gilt rim, signed: Konbu; menuki: boat in waves of shakudô and gold, leather-like binding over same, saya: black and red mottled lacquer. 19th century. Fabric bag.

Sword attributed to Bishû Osafune Kiyomitsu by Nobujiro Inami; dated October 1957

Provenance

Joachim F. Hoppe (1906 - 1960), employee and later director of the German steel Co. (Doitsu Seiko Kabushiki Kaisha) from the late 1930s to 1947.
The sword was given by former Japanese business colleagues as a gift to Mr Hoppe around 1957.
