Probably Upper Rhine-Region late 15th century

A presumably Upper Rhenish late 15th century carved wooden figure of the Virgin and Child.

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. With partially overpainted older polychromy.. The Virgin stands in balanced contrapposto, leaning slightly backwards and with the Christ Child - holding an apple - resting upon Her left hip. The composition is largely defined by the contrast between the plain, floor-length red gown of the Virgin and the drapery of the gold cloak she holds drawn across her body.
Minor wear. Mounted on a velvet-covered socle. Height 77 cm (without socle).

Provenance

Private ownership, Rhineland.
