Flemish circa 1520/1530

A Flemish carved oak figure of the Virgin and Child, circa 1520/1530.

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy.. The crowned Virgin stands in contrapposto in the crescent moon on a flat, ornamented plinth. She holds the nude Christ Child over Her right hip and hands Him an apple. The exceptional quality of this work is evident in the finely worked physiognomy and hair of the Virgin, as well as the drapery of Her robe and cloak.
Loss to the upper front edge of the plinth. Minor wear. Height 39 cm.
