On 7th October 1989, regardless of the mass exodus of the FDR inhabitants to Hungary, which had lasted for weeks, the FDR celebrated its 40th (and at the same time last) foundation day with a military parade of the NVA before the eyes of the world public and guests of honour, among them the Soviet head of state and party chairman Michail Gorbatschow.
