William Etty, attributed to

Venus and Cupid

Oil on canvas. 86 x 65 cm.

With a label to the reverse of the stretcher: "Exhibition of Pictures by the late Wm. Etty R.A. / Corporation Art Gallery, 1910”.
and a hand-written label: "Lord Northburk / Hamilton Place / Frame Refreshed / + Cleaned - not / gilt“.
The present work is a copy of a painting by Giovanni Battista Paggi (1554-1627) kept in the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London. Further versions of the composition by Paggi which vary slightly from both the London work and Etty's copy can be found in the Palazzo Bianco in Genoa and in various private collections in Genoa and Rome.
William Etty made numerous copies after old masters, of which the present interesting but presumably unfished work is a fine example. Etty must have seen Paggi's work in the Dulwich Picture Gallery, where it hung since 1811. The painting displays the British artist's well-known predilection for the female nude.

Provenance

In an Austrian private collection for around 50 years.
