A pair of cufflinks with portraits of emperor Frederick III.

Carved ivory in metal settings. After a medallion portrait. One head engraved to the reverse "Friedr. III.". H 4.2 cm.
Berlin, Paul Neumann, ca. 1890.

Frederick III (Potsdam 1831 - ibid. 1888), became crown prince of Prussia in 1861 when his father Wilhelm I ascended the throne, and crown prince of Germany in 1871. However, Frederick's reign as emperor lasted just 99 days, and his son William II's ascent to the throne in 1888 made him the third emperor in one year. The Berlin based sculptor Paul August Max Neumann (Breslau 1866 - Berlin 1942) probably created these cufflinks as patriotic souvenirs following the death of the emperor.

Provenance

In the possession of the sculptor's descendants.
