Northern France 3rd quarter 14th century

A Northern French wooden figure of the Virgin and Child, third quarter 14th century

Presumably walnut, carved almost entirely in the round, the reverse only partially flattened. With remains of former polychromy. The Virgin is shown standing in gently swaying contrapposto with Her upper body slightly leant back. The pose is accentuated by the vertical folds of Her floor-length blue gown, which contrast with the rich, horizontal drapery of the cloak held across Her body. She holds the Christ Child, who turns to face the beholder, over Her hip.
The Child's head and left hand, and the Virgin's right hand lacking. Vertical hairline cracks, wear. Height 26.5 cm.
