Goa 17th - 18th century

A large Goan ivory figure of the good shepherd, 17th - 18th century

Carved in the round and partially freestanding. Carved from five connected pieces. The upper part shows Christ as the good shepherd seated on an arrow-pierced heart with a lamb seated on His shoulder and another held in His left hand. He wears a short tunic and carries a water gourd tied to His belt. The high, figurally carved plinth shows the fountain of life in the upper section, the blessing saviour with two sheep to the centre and the adoration of the Christ Child in a rocky grotto below. The reverse is carved with several sheep and two lions and the socle is decorated with winged angel's heads. The mounting to the reverse presumably originally held a gloriole for the good shepherd.
Some vertical hairline cracks. Wear with minor losses. Height 44 cm.
