Northern Italy 17th century

A 17th century North Italian bronze figure depicting the conversion of St. Paul

The figure and horse cast separately and in the round, with old patina. Mounted on the original marble plinth.. This fine bronze captures the moment during St. Paul's conversion in which he fell from his rearing horse. The beast's back hoof rests on the stony outcrop of the marble base, thus encorporating it into the composition. The piece is thought to be the work of the Florentine sculptor Francesco Fanelli (circa 1577-1641), who was active in Northern Italy, England, and France.
Figure of Paul attached with a screw, the horse's tail reattached with solder. Minimal wear. Height 35 cm (with base).
