Probably Florence, mid-15th century

A presumably Florentine carved wooden figure of Christ as the Man of Sorrows, mid-15th century

Carved in the round, with older polychromy. This bust depicts Christ nude with His head leant to the side and His lips slightly parted, in a manner corresponding to that of contemporary depictions of the Man of Sorrows. This finely carved, expressive, and life-like piece is thought to originate from the circle of Desiderio da Settignano (ca. 1430 Settignano - 1464 Florence).
Mounted on a presumably original plinth, painted to resemble marble. Wear with minor losses. Height 48 cm (with plinth).
