Probably Upper Rhine-Region circa 1470/1480

A presumably Upper Rhenish carved wood figure of a female Saint, circa 1470/1480

Carved in the round and partially freestanding. Older, partially overpainted polychromy. A full-figure depiction of a formerly crowned female saint with elongated proportions standing in contrapposto and holding an open book in her right hand. The saint wears a detailed, floor-length gown and her finely carved curls fall far down her back. The high quality of the carving is particularly evident in the play of thick, compressed drapery of the saint's red cloak, which she holds drawn across her body with one lappet held in her left hand.
Two minor replacements to the plinth. Wear with minor losses. Height 82 cm.

Provenance

Private collection, South Germany.
