A probably Tyrolean wooden figure of Saint Mary Magdalene, circa 1480

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. Older, partially overpainted polychromy. The saint is depicted standing in contrapposto with her upper body leant backwards. She holds her attribute, the ointment jar, in both hands. Her head is covered by a white veil. The work's fine quality is particularly evident in the rich interplay of curving and vertical folds of the saint's long, high-waisted gown, framed by the undulating hems of the deeply undercut gold cloak.
Minimal wear. Height 72 cm.
