Probably Brabant, circa 1480/1490

A carved wooden figure of the Virgin and Child, presumably Brabantine, circa 1480/1490

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse hollowed out. Extensive reamains of an older, possibly original polychromy. A standing, full-figure depiction of the crowned Virgin holding the Christ Child in Her arms designed for a frontal viewpoint. Christ is depicted clothed and with an open book in His hands. The fine carving of this piece is particularly evident in the detailed observation of the folds of Mary's gown and cloak, which fall in a cascade of undulating drapery to Her feet.
The Child's right hand and parts of the book lost. Minimal wear. Mounted on a newer wooden plinth. Height 28.5 cm (without plinth).
