Probably Upper Rhine-Region circa 1480/1490

A presumably Upper Rhenish carved wooden relief of the nativity, circa 1480/90

The reverse flattened. With partially overpainted older polychromy. This high-relief depicts Mary and Joseph venerating the Christ Child, who is shown lain on a corner of the Virgin's robe. The ruined architecture of the stable is is shown before a gold ground, and the scene is completed by the addition of the ox and ass, as well as a shepherd and his grazing flock in the background. The fine quality and detail of this depiction is particularly evident in the depiction of the drapery.
Two vertical cracks (two metal staples to the reverse provide stability). Wear with minor losses to the polychromy. 86 x 81 x 5 cm.
