Oil on canvas (relined). 81 x 64.5 cm.

The sitter of this portrait is thought to be Madame Alphonse Lefranc. The present work could be identical with a portrait of Lefranc known to have been exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1840. The work is known to have been purchased from the art dealership of Dr. Fritz and Dr. Peter Nathan in Zurich, who also owned the portrait of the sitter's husband, Alphonse (L. Leopoittevin: Jean Francois Millet. Portraitist, Paris 1971, no. 60).
