Balthasar Schmitt

A Carrara marble relief of Saint Cecilia

The sides only smoothed to enable the piece to be set into a wall. This relief displays particularly fine rendering of the surfaces and details. It depicts the saint playing an organ accompanied by two angels singing. Signed and dated to the lower right "Balth. Schmitt Roma 1892". Balthasar Schmitt first attended the school of applied arts in Nuremberg and the academy of the pictorial arts in Munich before receiving a stipend to travel to Rome from 1889-1892. He became a teacher at the Munich academy in 1905, and usually produced works with Christian subjects.
Minimal wear to the upper margin, otherwise in perfect condition. 84.5 x 56.5 x 6 cm.

Provenance

Private collection, Hesse.
