Józef Chelmonski

Portrait of a Man in a Hat

Oil on canvas, mounted on card. 61.5 x 44.5 cm.
Signed lower left: JOZEF CHELMONSKI.

Józef Chelmonski was taught to paint by his father and by Wojciech Gerson. He resided in Munich from 1871 to 1874, where he joined the circle of Polish artists surrounding J. Brandt and M. Gierymski. He moved to Paris in 1875 before returning to Poland in 1887. Even throughout his lifetime, his works were highly sought-after in Continental Europe as well as England and America, especially his depictions of galloping horses, but also his landscapes, genre scenes, and portraits. The present work depicts a man against a green background, dressed in a pale brown coat and a hat that is pulled down low so as to cast shadow over his eyes. A self-portrait by the artist dated 1902 displays some similarities to the present work (Muzeum Narodowe in Warsaw, inv. no. 76691).
