Charles Vetter

The Stachus in Munich

Oil on canvas. 53.5 x 65.5 cm.
Signed lower right: C. Vetter.

Charles (Karl Friedrich Alfred) Vetter was born in Eastern Prussia and began his studies at the Academy in Munich in 1881. He became a founding member of the Munich Secession in 1892. His œuvre mainly consists of Impressionistic city views, especially of his chosen home city of Munich. Like his colleague Lesser Ury in Berlin, who was of a similar age to Vetter, he was fascinated by the special light conditions produced during dull or rainy days, the reflections seen in puddles and wet streets, and by the sombre half-light of overcast skies. This image depicts one of Munich's most prominent squares, the Stachus, during a shower of rain.
