Friedrich Kallmorgen

View of Hamburg Harbour

Oil on canvas. 170 x 260 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: Fr. Kallmorgen 1910.

Friedrich Kallmorgen studied at the Düsseldorf Academy before moving to Karlsruhe in 1877. There he associated with the circle of Gustav Schönleber, which inspired him to turn to Impressionism. This style was to have a lasting influence on his career. In 1902, he succeeded Eugen Bracht as head of the landscape class at the Berlin Academy. He was to find his defining motif late in his œuvre, becoming the iconic painter of Hamburg Harbour. This large-scale work, depicting the Elbe River, the harbour, and the city silhouette against gathering clouds, and is among Kallmorgen’s finest works.
