In some places the dark tonality of this late landscape is relieved by a silvery lightening which creates fascinating, seemingly phosphorescent highlights in the waves of the sea, with their peaks and valleys, and also on the horizon line of the hilly landscape.
“The watercolours represent a distinctive and prominent art form within Seehaus's painterly oeuvre. In terms of quality, they are equal to the paintings and often even surpass them. [...] He did not transfer every innovation employed in the watercolours to his paintings; conversely, watercolours of 'sublime' themes like the Bergstadt [mountain town] were inconceivable to him. The paintings possess what could be called an 'official' character, that is, the given subject is articulated in the most exemplary and finalised form possible. In the watercolours, on the other hand, Seehaus sought and found opportunities for experimentation and variation.” (Peter Dering, Paul Adolf Seehaus, Leben und Werk, Bonn 2004, p. 103).
