A large carved wooden sleigh formed as a griffon

Oak and softwood (possibly cedar), several layers of paint and retouched gilding, remnants of fur and textiles covering the original upholstery, cast iron mountings, gilt iron locks, tin base. Designed as a green-painted dragon forming the seat and resting on two curved runners. The wings open to form the doors. The prow formed as a carved female head. With an upholstered seat for the driver at the back. The right shoe missing, the upholstery restored, the covers partially replaced, losses to the wood. H ca. 130, L ca. 218, W ca. 95 cm.
Southern Netherlands (modern day Belgium), mid- to 2nd half 18th C.

This sled originates by repute from the estate of Prince Charles Alexander of Lorraine and Bar (Lunéville 1712 - 1780 Tervuren), Governor General of the Austrian Netherlands, who took residence in Brussels in 1744. Should this be correct, it would make the present work the oldest surviving example from the region.

Provenance

Formerly belonging to the collection of the Museum voor Sierkunst in Ghent, sold in 1996.
Private collection, Belgium.

Literature

Numerous comparable sledges in the Musée du Cinquantenaire, Brussels.
