France early 14th century

An early 14th century French carved ivory diptych with the Virgin and the Crucifixion

Carved ivory with minimal remains of former polychromy. These two small reliefs with plain borders were probably carved in Paris. One depicts the Virgin flanked by John the Baptist and Saint Christopher, the other shows the Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist present at the Crucifixion. The works are bordered at the upper edge by Gothic arches. The presence of Saint Christopher indicates that the diptych may have served as a travel altarpiece. Robert Suckale's expertise for this work is lost.
Some hairline cracks to the frame. Each panel 9.1 x 6 cm.
