A carved oak figure of Saint Adrian from the studio of Dries Holthuys

Carved three-quarters in the round and partially freestanding. The reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out in the centre. Minimal remains of older polychromy. This finely carved work depicts the saint standing in contrapposto dressed in armour. He is shown with his attributes - an anvil in his left hand and a lion at his feet. The axe in the anvil (modern mountings still extant) and the iron bar in his left hand now lacking. The work is characterised by its attention to detail and the exceptionally fine drapery of the saint's trailing cloak. The general composition of the piece, and especially the saint's facial features, allow it to be assigned to the œuvre of the Lower Rhenish sculptor Dries Holthuys from Cleves and his workshop.
Parts of the hat brim replaced. Two cracks to the left side of the plinth. Wear with minor losses. Height 107 cm.

Provenance

Private collection, Germany.
