Oswald Achenbach was just 19 years old when he painted this work, and his still slightly tentative hand is noticable in this depiction of an Upper Bavarian or Austrian landscape. In his early years, he concentrated on landscape motifs drawn from his home in the Rhineland and from previous sojourns to the Alps. Only very few works from the 1840s are known. The extent of his known œuvre first begins to increase after around 1848.
