Carl Maria Nicolaus Hummel was the son of the famous composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel, and was born in Weimar. He was a pupil and employee of Friedrich Preller the Elder from 1834 to 1842 and often accompanied him on his travels. Hummel eventually became a Professor at the Großherzoglich-Sächsische Kunstschule in his hometown of Weimar. He drew many of his motifs from the landscapes of the Tyrol and the Italian Alps, as in the present work.
