Otto Dix

Lumpi
Circa 1923

Pencil drawing on firm, delicately textured paper (guestbook entry) 29.2 x 19.3 cm Framed under glass. Unsigned. Inscribed 'Lumpi' in Sütterlin script in the centre below the depiction. - Evenly browned all over. Traces of thread stitching in upper margin.

There were artistic contributions in the former guest book belonging to the Arthur Kaufmann family by their close friend Otto Dix and by other artists who met on a weekly basis at a jour fix at the Kaufmann’s. The head of the house, Arthur Kaufmann (1888 - 1971), also a painter, was a co-founder of the artist group "Junges Rheinland". In addition to portraits of his friends, among them Johanna Ey and Wollheim, Dix sketched one of his typical crowing roosters – and “Lumpi”. On a different occasion, the dachshund had obviously also served as a mount in the guest book drawing "Children's Games“ (cf. Lorenz EDV 13.1.31).
