A carved ivory tankard with the triumph of Titus

Oval corpus carved with a continuous scene in two sections. The narrow front shows the Roman Emperor in a quadriga and a winged figure holding a laurel wreath over his head. The broader sides depict the battle spoils including the treasure from the Temple in Jerusalem. The domed stepped lid with a standing emperor finial. The richly carved figural handle with Minerva and a grotesque mascaron as the thumbrest. The base with a coat-of-arms and engraved with the date 1709. Minor restorations, the lid glued and loosely attached. H 43.6 cm.
2nd half 19th C.

Parts of this composition echo that of the Arch of Titus, which Bernard de Monfaucon published in his work "L'Antiquité expliquée et représentée en figures" between 1719 and 1724.
