A German ivory tankard with a battle scene

Cylindrical corpus finely carved with a continuous battle scene. The handle carved as a bound and bearded warrior. The lid bordered with acanthus scrolls crowned by a figure of a soldier in classical costume throwing a speer. Minimal losses, a crack to the top of the lid, remnants of old glue to the horseman's torso. H 38 cm.
Circa 1880.

The decor adapts details from the engraving "Hebraerum victoria ab amalechitis reportata" (Victory of the Israelites over the Amalekites) by Antonio Tempesta and Nicolaus van Aelst, which was published in 1609.
