An important suite of four ivory figures representing the four seasons

Carved in the round from solid ivory, mounted on ebonised wood plinths with ivory veneer. Four female figures representing the four seasons standing on round pedestals. The spring is shown scattering flowers from her apron, the summer holds a sheaf of wheat, the autumn is represented as the goddess Diana with a bow and a bird carried over her shoulder, the winter is wrapped in a fleece and stands beside a dish of burning coals. Minor cracks and losses, older insect damage to the wood. H ca. 68 cm.
England or Northern France, 2nd half 19th C.
