"Baigneuse" after Etienne-Maurice Falconet

White marble copy of Falconet's statue. Signed to the back of the plinth: "Prof. Bargelli Galleria BAZZANTI FIRENZE". H 84.5 cm.
Pietro Bazzanti workshop, late 19th C. / circa 1900.

The famous figure of a woman bathing was first presented in 1757 when Etienne Maurice Falconet was appointed head of the sculpture studio at Sèvres porcelain manufactory. The work was produced in varying sizes in biscuit porcelain as of 1758. The original marble sculpture from the collection of Madame du Barry was transferred to the Louvre in 1855.
This version of the composition by the workshop of Pietro Bazzanti must have been produced after 1860. The "bottega" was founded in 1825 specialised in high-quality reproductions of antique sculptures and won several prizes. Today it is recognised as part of the cultural and artistic heritage of the city of Florence.
