A South German carved wooden angel candlestick, circa 1490

Carved in the round. Remains of partially overpainted polychromy. A standing figure of an angel in a long gown beneath a cope with a long tassel hanging from its hood. He carries a hexagonal candlestick aloft to one side. The sculptor Jakob Russ, who was active in Ravensburg from 1482 to 1506, was recently suggested as the possible author of this piece.
The wings lost. Minimal wear. Mounted on an octagonal wooden plinth. Height 61 cm (without plinth).
