Sheet 1 of the series "Jahrmarkt" comprising 10 etchings, printed by Franz Hanfstaengl, published by the Marées Gesellschaft, R. Piper & Co., Munich 1922. With the blindstamp of the Marées Gesellschaft.

“Der Ausrufer” is the opening work of “Der Jahrmarkt”, which is one of Max Beckmann's best-known portfolios and contains a total of 10 etchings. In this self-portrait, the artist personally rings in the spectacle to come. With a cigarette resting casually in the corner of his mouth and a bell in his hand, he shows his viewers the way; a sign behind his back announces the “Circus Beckmann”. For Beckmann the self-portrait was an important way of expressing and exploring himself as an individual. Here he assumes a role tailored to his own person.
