A portrait miniature of an Empire lady with her son

Gouache on ivory backed by thin metal foil. Knee-length portraits of a lady and a boy sitting on a sofa with a view of a river landscape. The lady wears a white chemise, the boy a blue jacket. In a gilt metal frame of the period. Signed to the right of the balustrade: "Le Guay". 9.7 x 9 cm. Frame: 10.3 x 9.5 cm.
Etienne-Charles Leguay, circa 1810.

Leguay was among the most accomplished miniaturists of the Napoleonic era, and created numerous exceptional miniature versions of portraits of the Bonaparte family. Like his father, he learnt to paint in the Sèvres porcelain manufactory and continued to supply them with portraits until 1840. Leguay also studied in the painting school of the artist Joseph-Marie Vien and at the Ecole de l'Academie in Paris.
