An important Spanish mortar with an aristocratic coat-of-arms

Golden brown bronze with dark brown patina. Thick-walled cylindrical form with sloping rim. Eight prominent baluster ribs surround the body alternating with eight coats-of-arms and two stars. Minor damage to the bases of the ribs, possibly due to being used on a plinth. H 15.8, D 22 cm. Weight 13.3 kg. Including a corresponding pestle.
Attributed to Madrid, probably made for the royal court, first half 16th C.
